Lyophilization, storage, and handling

Why research peptides ship as lyophilized solids, how cold storage and freeze–thaw cycles affect solutions, and how to do reconstitution arithmetic without turning a catalog into a clinical protocol.

What lyophilization does

Lyophilization (freeze-drying) removes water from a frozen solution under vacuum so the peptide is stored as a dry cake or powder. Less free water slows hydrolysis and many aggregation pathways. The cake is still hygroscopic: opened vials pick up moisture from air. Prime Labs educational copy states that lyophilized material is sealed under inert atmosphere and shipped in insulated packaging with cold packs where required. That is packaging practice, not a claim that ambient transit is a validated long-term storage condition.

Storage of the dry solid

Product pages recommend storing lyophilized material at −20°C or below, protected from light and moisture. Bring the closed vial toward ambient temperature before opening to reduce condensation on the cake. Recap promptly. Do not treat a warm shipping interval as permission to store opened vials on a bench. Follow the storage statement on the lot documentation when it is stricter than the catalog line.

Reconstitution in the laboratory

Reconstitution means dissolving the cake in a diluent specified by the laboratory’s SOP (commonly sterile water, bacteriostatic water, or a buffer — the choice is institutional, not a storefront recommendation for use in animals or humans). Direct the solvent down the glass wall; swirl gently; avoid vigorous foaming. Record diluent, volume, date, and operator. The calculator below only converts mass and volume into concentration for notebook arithmetic.

Solutions, refrigeration, freeze–thaw

Once in solution, chemical and physical stability usually drop. Educational storage copy on Prime Labs product records states that reconstituted solutions should be refrigerated at 2–8°C and used within the laboratory’s validated research window. Repeated freeze–thaw cycles promote aggregation and adsorption losses. Aliquot if the SOP requires frozen storage. Never present solution handling as a consumer “reconstitution kit.”

Research-use framing

Prime Labs materials are supplied as laboratory reagents for research use only. They are not for human or veterinary use and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
